Intuition is an unconscious form of knowledge. It is immediate and often not open to rational/analytical thought processes. Intuition differs from an opinion since opinion is based on experience, while an intuition is held to be affected by previous experiences only unconsciously. Intuition also differs from instinct, which does not have the experience element at all. Intuition is trans-intellectual, while instinct is pre-intellectual. A person who has an intuitive opinion cannot immediately fully explain why he or she holds that view. However, a person may later rationalize an intuition by developing a chain of logic to demonstrate more structurally why the intuition is valid.

Intuition is one source of common sense. It can also help in induction to gain empirical knowledge. Sources of intuition are feeling, experiences and knowledge.

In alternative medicine, a medical intuitive is a person who alleges to have learned to apply their intuition to the field of medical diagnosis. There are numerous medical professionals, health care workers, scientists and others who are skeptical of the claims of such abilities.

Medical intuition as a field was initiated primarily by Caroline Myss a Ph.D. in “intuition and energy medicine”. Medical intuitives claim to be able to view many physical problems in a person’s aura before any physical signs of illness can be detected. Areas of illness are said to frequently appear to medical intuitives as dark, grainy, or sticky energy.

Hypnosis is a totally natural state of mind. When under hypnosis you will feel very relaxed, just like that wonderful feeling when you are tired lying in your bed and you are so overcome with comfort that you wish the moment could last forever. Through simple hypnotic, relaxation techniques you can easily attain this state at which time it becomes easy, with the help of a trained hypnotherapist, to visualize yourself becoming healthier, happier, more confident, a non-smoker. Whatever it is that you want to be!

Hypnotherapy, or self-hypnosis once you’ve learned how to use the tools for yourself, can be a very effective tool for asking the right kind of ‘internal’ questions. For instance, have a think about the following:

1. What do you want your life to be like in a year’s time? Make your answer as compelling as possible – what do you really want it to be like?

2. What changes will you need to make for this to happen? Don’t just think logically. What changes will you have to make in the WAY that you think?

3. Could anything negative happen if you do make these changes? In other words, how much do you really want it?

How about committing to spending the rest of today thinking over these exciting questions but not actually being aware that you are doing so? Does this sound a bit strange? It shouldn’t, because that’s what people do when they are described by others as ‘preoccupied’ or ‘stressed’ or ‘anxious’. This deeper level of thinking is the level at which hypnotherapy or self-hypnosis can have proven effects.

Many people claim that they have never been hypnotized, but they do admit to having drifted off whilst thinking about a loved one, forgetting large chunks of a car journey (commonly known as highway hypnosis), or ‘going somewhere else’ while reading a book. These are all examples of natural trance states. One of the great things about hypnosis is that in the hands of a reputable practitioner it is harmless and produces no damaging side effects, whilst providing positive therapeutic benefits.

What Does Hypnotherapy Involve?

Hypnotherapy is a two way process between the therapist and the client, a professional partnership. A person cannot be hypnotized unless he or she agrees and co-operates – this cannot be stressed enough. Also whilst hypnotized, nobody can make you do anything which you do not want to do. Even those people on television eating raw onions and pretending to be Madonna are doing it because they want to! They have chosen to participate. It must be emphasized here that what hypnotherapists do is, by definition, therapeutic. Stage hypnosis is very different. It is a form of entertainment.

What is homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is based on the Law of Similars. The truth of this law has been verified experimentally and clinically for the last 200 years.

Let’s look at an example: If your child accidentally ingests certain poisons, you may be advised to administer Syrup of Ipecac to induce vomiting. Ipecac is derived from the root of a South American plant called Ipecacuanha. The name, in the native language, means “the plant by the road which makes you throw up.” Eating the plant causes vomiting.

When a group of healthy volunteers took this substance to determine the effects of this drug, they found that the drug induced other symptoms as well. The mouth retained much saliva. The tongue was very clean. There was a cough so severe that it led to gagging and vomiting. There was incessant nausea. While it is expected that vomiting would usually relieve the nausea, this was not the case.

Such an experiment, using healthy volunteers, is called a proving, and it is the homeopath’s source of information about the action of a drug.

Of what use could this plant be? If a person were suffering from a gagging cough after a cold, or a woman were experiencing morning sickness with incessant nausea that is not relieved by vomiting, then Ipecacuanha, administered in a minute dose, especially prepared by a homeopathic pharmacy in accordance with FDA approved guidelines, can allay the “similar” suffering.

Samuel Hahnemann described this principle by using a Latin phrase: Similia Similibus Curentur, which translates: “Let likes cure likes.” It is a principle that has been known for centuries. Hahnemann developed the principle into a system of medicine called homeopathy, and it has been used successfully for the last 200 years.

How does homeopathy differ from conventional medicine?

How does the concept of homeopathy differ from that of conventional medicine? Very simply, homeopathy attempts to stimulate the body to recover itself. Let’s look at an example: the common cough.

First, we must accept that all symptoms, no matter how uncomfortable they are, represent the body’s attempt to restore itself to health. Instead of looking upon the symptoms as something wrong which must be set right, we see them as signs of the way the body is attempting to help itself. Instead of trying to stop the cough with suppressants, as conventional medicine does, a homeopath will give a remedy that will cause a cough in a healthy person, and thus stimulate the ill body to restore itself.

Second, we must look at the totality of the symptoms presented. We each experience a cough in our unique way. Yet conventional medicine acts as if all coughs were alike. It therefore offers a series of suppressive drugs something to suppress the cough, something to dry the mucus, something to lower the histamine level, something to ease falling asleep.

Homeopathy, on the other hand, looks for the one substance that will cause similar symptoms in a healthy person. The person with a cough characterized by being worse when breathing cold air, and sounding like a deep bark, will need a quite different remedy than the person whose cough is loose in the morning, dry in the evening, and better when sitting up in bed. We characterize both as “coughs” but they are different illnesses in the individuals, and therefore require different homeopathic treatment.

In conventional medical thought, health is seen simply as the absence of disease. You assume that you are healthy if there is nothing wrong with you. To a person versed in homeopathy, health is much more than that. A healthy person is a person who is free on all levels: physical, emotional, and mental. Obviously, a person with a broken leg is not free, on the physical level, to move around. But on a more subtle level, a person who cannot eat certain foods or is allergic to certain materials is also experiencing a lack of freedom. It is a good emotional release to cry at a “tear jerker” movie, but someone who continues to cry for several weeks afterwards is experiencing a lack of freedom on the emotional level. Likewise, a person who cannot absorb what he has read or cannot remember day to day appointments is experiencing a restriction on the mental level. The homeopath recognizes such limitations and attempts, through the use of the properly selected remedies, to restore the person to health and freedom.

An important basic difference exists between conventional medical therapy and homeopathy. In conventional therapy, the aim often is to control the illness through regular use of medical substances, even if the medication is nothing more than vitamins. If the medication is withdrawn, however, the person returns to illness. There has been no cure. A person who takes a pill for high blood pressure every day is not undergoing a cure but is only controlling the symptoms. Homeopathy’s aim is the cure: “The complete restoration of perfect health,” as Dr. Samuel Hahneman said.

Numerology

Numerology is a fascinating science that allows you to learn secrets about who you are and who you are meant to be. Amazingly this can be accomplished by using the number equivalents of your name and birth date.

This is accomplished by using a chart developed by Pythagoras over 10,00 years ago.Pythagoras and his followers reduced the universal numbers to the figures 1-9 as the primary numbers from which all others may be formed.

There is a picture Alphabet that was developed to break down names into numbers. By adding the numbers together and reducing them down to the primary number you can determine the vibration of your name and birth date.

There are 3 calculations when determining the numerology for you.

Life Path – Determined by adding the numbers of your Birth Date

What is Life Path Number?

This number represents who you are at birth and the native traits that you will carry with you through life. Your Numerological Life path Number represents the traits and talents that you were born with and the probable journey you will take during your lifetime.

Expression – Determined by adding all the numbers for your Birth Name

What is Expression Number(Destiny Number)?

Although this number is called both of these names. This is the number that describes the talents and attitudes available in this lifetime. If you choose to develop and use them. This is sometimes referred to as your potential or destiny.Thess goals may not be easily reached but it is your goal to try.It is your field of opportunity. Your life path number tells you who you are and this number reads who you must be.

Soul Urge (Hearts Desire) – Determined by adding all of the vowels of your Birth Name.

What is Soul Urge Number?

The Soul Urge or as it is sometimes called, the heart’s desire, is an important core influence in numerology. This means your inner craving, likes and dislikes.

Numerology can also help you determine or identify potential life partners by showing you strengths and weaknesses of partnerships in love and even in business.

Treating Causes Not Just Symptoms

by Marian Brown

Pets continue to be popular in our society, yet the reasons we have them is changing. No longer are our dogs, cats, and horses “working” for their keep, they have become trusted companions and family members. They enjoy the comforts of our homes, and in recent years the benefits of improved health care and specifically holistic veterinary care.

Holistic veterinary care, like that of human care, looks at the “whole”, not just isolated parts. It focuses on resolving the cause and the problem, not just alleviating symptoms. Overall improvement of the quality of life and living is the goal. In addition to western approaches, such as antibiotics (drugs) and surgery, holistic approaches include acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, herbology, Bach flower remedies, and nutritional therapy.

A major key in holistic veterinary care is that the doctor looks at the whole picture. Most will take a detailed background of the animal–medical being just a part. They will look at the environment the animal came from and where it is now, any recurrent problems and their pattern, and the pet’s relationship with its owner (and family members). From this information the veterinarian, with the owner, can work to pinpoint causes and develop appropriate and feasible treatment plans. The plan may include several approaches and phases with optimum health as its goal. An example may be that the pet receives an antibiotic for a severe infection, acupuncture for improved healing and well-being, and an improved diet.

Holistic veterinary care in the Western world is still in its infancy. The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, based in Maryland, was just founded in 1981. And more recently in 1988, acupuncture was recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Both veterinary acupuncturist and chiropractors have formed their own organizations to help educate and create awareness of the alternatives available in veterinary care. Homeopathic veterinarians participate in the National Center for Homeopathy.

Holistic pet care has come a long way in just a short time, but it still has a way to go to be accepted and utilized by more pet owners.

A childbirth that often totally eliminates the need for chemical anaesthesia
A reduced risk of breech presentation and other complications
Easier resolution in the event of a complication
A shorter birth process (by several hours)
Less fatigue during birthing leaving you energy for the actual birth

What is an herbalist?

In the United States, an herbalist is a self-defined professional. There is no national or state system of licensure or certification for herbalists. Professional groups may grant certification to members that have reached a certain level of training as an herbalist. Some herbalists concentrate on growing or wild crafting (picking) herbs. Others manufacture herbal products. Still others teach or counsel people about the use of herbs as medicine.

One branch of anthropology, called ethno botany, studies the use of plants in other cultures, particularly their use as medicine. Ethno botanists, who receive their training through the standard university system, have classified a number of medicinal herbs. Their work helps preserve the traditional folk medicine of indigenous people around the world. The American Botanical Council web site lists some current ethno botanical expeditions.

What is herbal medicine?
Many different types of natural medicine use herbs as part of their practice. In the United States, herbal medicine generally refers to a system of medicine that uses European or North American plants. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) uses plants native to China or Asia, while Ayurvedic herbal medicine uses plants native to India. Modern herbalists often use plants from many different regions of the world, and they do not restrict their practice only to those plants classified as an herb (a seed plant whose stem withers away annually). Instead, in medicine, an herb can be a root, a piece of tree bark, a mushroom, or anything else which grows naturally and falls into the plant kingdom.

Phytopharmaceutical literally means “plant medicine” and has become a popular term for some types of herbal medicine, especially those practices that treat the herb or the herbal extract as a drug.

What are Flower Essences?

Used in various forms throughout the ages, flower essences (also called flower remedies) were introduced to the modern world by the research of Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and homeopath. Dr. Bach developed his flower essences in the 1920′s and 30′s in response to the need for a very gentle form of healing that addressed the mental, emotional and spiritual issues he believed were the underlying causes of disease.

The term flower essence refers to liquid tinctures made from flowers that are prepared so that the life force and unique subtle energetic1 pattern2 of a plant are captured in water. Created using a simple, low tech process3, flower essences are preparations of pure energy and contain none of the physical substance of the plant. When introduced into ones’ energy field, they dissolve energetic blocks and imbalances that lead to unhappiness and dis-ease by interacting with and balancing the complex network of energetic patterns that are the manifestations of life. This is possible because a sympathetic attunement exists between humanity and individual flower essences4.

Flower essences are most often used to help process trauma and stress, clear away unproductive life patterns, and expand and elevate consciousness. They act as catalysts for inner change by gently balancing, supporting and enhancing the “better angels of our nature”. This catalyzing and balancing process has a direct and positive impact on consciousness.

When flower essences are used to eliminate energetic impediments, consciousness is raised and the individual is able to function from a point that is closer to the real Self, which brings a sense of inner harmony. As conscious awareness is elevated, the ability to understand and incorporate higher ideals and healthier life patterns is enhanced, aiding the restoration of happiness and health.

This shift may be gradual or immediate. For example, in acute or emergency situations, the action of flower essences is often observed to be dramatic, remarkable and swift, while the transformation of deep, long-standing issues may be observed to emerge over a period of time.

Flower essences fall within the general alternative healing category of vibrational healing techniques. Other vibrational techniques include such disciplines as homeopathy and acupuncture. Since flower essences are basically tinctures of the energy of pure consciousness, they operate in the realm of consciousness. Because they operate in the realm of consciousness, flower essences enjoy what is known as “self-adjusting” properties. This means that when an essence is used that is inappropriate, nothing happens – there are no adverse reactions5. In addition, flower essences have the added benefit of not interfering with any other modalities or medications one may be using, and are not habit forming. Flower essences are the most deep acting form of vibrational healing.

Flower essences have no fragrance and flower essence healing should not be confused with aromatherapy. While aromatherapy and flower essences often address the same issues (tension, stress, etc) they operate at different levels: aromatherapy utilizes direct stimulation through the senses whereas flower essences stimulate the non-physical consciousness by supplying subtle energetic healing patterns.

What is Feng Shui?

Feng Shui, literally means wind and water. It is rapidly becoming a standard practice for creating the ideal environment in which to live and work.

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese study of the natural and “built” environment and has been practiced for thousands of years. This environment can be at the office, in your home, in a building, or on real property. A Feng Shui analysis examines the surrounding environment, the building, how the people interact with the building and looks at time-related factors. Based upon these considerations, recommendations can be made on how to improve your relationship with the environment around you. Results include prosperity, health benefits, and well being. Properly applied, Feng Shui recommendations can result in improvements in the life of the individuals who occupy the property.

How did Feng Shui originate?

Feng Shui can be stated as a form of “Geo-mancy” or “Earth Wisdom.” Many cultures in the world have a form of Geomancy in their history. The Chinese form of Geomancy, or Feng Shui, has evolved to be both an Science and an Art. The science comes from the calculations and methodology used in analyzing a property. The Art of Feng Shui is the wisdom acquired from performing a multitude of analysis and knowing the exact degree to which the remedies (which are the results of the scientific analysis) are prescribed.

Throughout ancient China, classical Feng Shui was a closely guarded discipline used as a tool to ensure the good health, wealth, and power of the Imperial Dynasties. The keepers of this secret body of knowledge – Feng Shui Masters*, were highly respected meteorologists, astronomers, and other scientists and who were charged with sustaining the good fortune and prosperity of the royal court. It has been guardedly passed down the generations through very specific lineages.

*These masters were very selective of their protégées. Extreme care was exercised in the selection of candidates who would become their successors.

How are these principles applied?

Feng Shui is based upon a set of theories and complex calculations derived from the I-Ching. This includes an in-depth understanding and application of the basic principles. Using these principles and taking into account the physical relationship between the natural environment and the magnetic fields of the Earth provides a “blueprint” of the influences around us. Using this blueprint we can see clearly the energies or “Chi” that effect us in our properties.

How is a Feng Shui analysis done?

The Feng Shui practitioner first observes the environment, using a Lo Pan (compass) to determine the orientation of the property. Calculations are then completed according to the basic principles. Then a determination of the energy characteristics within the property and its resulting effects on the occupants is made based on the results of these calculations. Remedies are then prescribed where necessary in order to balance the energy to produce a positive effect!

What the Feldenkrais Method is and what it does

1. The Feldenkrais Method is an educational system that develops a functional awareness of the self in the environment. The Method utilizes the fact that the body is the primary vehicle for learning.

2. The Feldenkrais Method is an approach to working with people which expands their repertoire of movements, enhances awareness, improves function and enables people to express themselves more fully.

3. The Feldenkrais Method directly addresses the question of how to facilitate the learning that is necessary for organizing the whole self and recovering excluded and unconsidered movement patterns or actions.

4. This is done by expanding the self-image through movement sequences that bring attention to the parts of the self that are out of awareness and uninvolved in functional actions. Better function is evoked by establishing an improved dynamic relationship between the individual, gravity, and society. Feldenkrais, himself, defined function as the interaction of the person with the outside world or the self with the environment.

5. The Method enables people to include, in their functioning, movements and parts of the body unconsidered, forgotten or excluded from their habitual actions or images of actions. By allowing persons to learn how their whole body cooperates in any movement, the Feldenkrais Method assists people to live their lives more fully, efficiently and comfortably.

6. The improvement of physical functioning is not necessarily an end in itself. Such improvement is based on developing a broader functional awareness which is often a gateway to more generalized enhancement of physical functioning in the context of one’s environment and life.

7. The Feldenkrais Method is based on self-organization and self-regulation in learning.

8. The Feldenkrais Method is expressed in two parallel forms: Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration®.

9. Awareness Through Movement consists of verbally directed movement sequences presented primarily to groups. There are several hundred hours of Awareness Through Movement lessons. A lesson generally lasts from thirty to sixty minutes. Each lesson is usually organized around a particular function.

10. In Awareness Through Movement lessons, people engage in precisely structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining. Many are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities. Some are based on more abstract explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. The lessons consist of comfortable, easy movements that gradually evolve into movements of greater range and complexity. There are hundreds of Awareness Through Movement lessons contained in the Feldenkrais Method that vary, for all levels of movement ability, from simple in structure and physical demand to more difficult lessons.

11. Awareness Through Movement lessons attempt to make one aware of this/her habitual neuromuscular patterns and rigidities and to expand options for new ways of moving while increasing sensitivity and improving efficiency.

12. A major goal of Awareness Through Movement is to learn how one’s most basic functions are organized. By experiencing the details of how one performs any action, the student has the opportunity to learn how to:

* Attend to his/her whole self

* Eliminate unnecessary energy expenditure

* Mobilize his/her intentions into actions

* Learn

13. Functional Integration is the other form of expressing the Feldenkrais Method. Just as Feldenkrais practitioners can guide people through movement sequences verbally in Awareness Through Movement, they also guide people through movement with gentle, non-invasive touching in Functional Integration.

14. Functional Integration is a hands-on form of tactile, kinesthetic communication. The Feldenkrais practitioner communicates to the student how he/she organizes his/her body and hints, through gentle touching and movement, how to move in more expanded functional motor patterns.

15. The Functional Integration lesson should relate to a desire, intention, or need of the student. The learning process is carried out without the use of any invasive or forceful procedure. Through rapport and respect for the student’s abilities, qualities, and integrity, the practitioner/teacher creates an environment in which the student can learn comfortably.

16. In Functional Integration, the practitioner/teacher develops a lesson for the student, custom-tailored to the unique configuration of that particular person, at that particular moment. The practitioner conveys the experience of comfort, pleasure, and ease of movement while the student learns how to reorganize his/her body and behavior in new and more effective manners.

17. In Functional Integration, the practitioner/teacher’s intention is instructive and communicative.

18. Functional Integration is usually performed with the student lying on a table designed specifically for the work. It can also be done with the student in sitting or standing positions. At times, various props are used in an effort to support the person’s body con-figuration or to facilitate certain movements.

19. The Method is based on principles of physics, biomechanics and an empirical understanding of learning and human development.
