Echinacea

Names: Purple Coneflower

Typical Places Found: Throughout North American prairies, plains, and open woodlands.

Part Used:  The root

Anti-microbial, immunomodulator, anti-catarrhal, alterative

Echinacea is one of the primary remedies for helping the body rid itself of microbial infections. It is often effective against both bacterial and viral attacks, and may be used in conditions such as boils, septicemia and similar infections. In conjunction with other herbs it may be used for any infection anywhere in the body. For example in combination with Yarrow or Bearberry it will effectively stop cystitis. It is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract such as laryngitis, tonsillitis and for catarrhal conditions of the nose and sinus.

In general it may be used widely and safely. There are many ailments that this fantastic herb can be used for such as:

  • As a mouthwash for the treatment of pyorrhea and gingivitis
  • An external lotion to help septic sores and cuts

It seems to prevent infection and repair tissue damaged by infection, partially through inhibiting the activity of the enzyme hyaluronidase. Echinacea inhibits the action of hyaluronidase by bonding with it in some way, resulting in a temporary increase in the integrity of the barrier. This all points to the conclusion that its actions relate to immune system functioning on some level, helping deal with infections and stimulating the immune response. It activates the macrophages that destroy both cancerous cells and pathogens, increases the level of phagocytosis by raising levels of white blood cells such as the neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and B lymphocytes. It also has an effect on properidin levels, indication an activation of the complement system.

Preparations & Dosage: Decoction: put 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the root in one cup of water and bring it slowly to boil. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Tincture: Take 1-4 ml of the tincture three times a day. Echinacea is often, inappropriately, used as a daily immune support.

Herbal remedies to ease asthma

Asthma is caused by the constriction of the airways within the Lungs. Some of its distressing symptoms can be relieved by using herbal treatments. Rates of asthma are on the increase, and now many children suffer the chronic wheezing and breathing difficulties associated with this condition. Common triggers are dust mites, and pollen, animal hair, and even stress. Conventional inhalers alleviate the symptoms associated with asthma, but herbal treatments can provide similar relief.

Soothing herbs

Lobelia and visnaga herbs help to relax the muscles of the bronchial tubes and make breathing easier. Other herbs such as elecampane and nettle interrupt the body’s overproduction of anti-inflammatory compounds, and expectorant herbs such as thyme and honeysuckle are also useful.

Caution!

Speak with your doctor to make sure that herbal remedies will not interfere with your prescribed medication.

What causes an asthma attack?

During anwhat causes an asthma attack asthma attack, the muscle fibers lining the airways of the lungs go into spasm. As the airways (bronchioles) constrict, less air travels into the lungs, making breathing difficult. The lining of the bronchioles is covered in a layer of mucus, which thickens during an attack and restricts breathing even more.

Environment

External, environmental forces are often the dominant contributing factors to asthma attack. Pollution and pollen are the two biggest irritants of sensitive airways and if you’re living somewhere in which these conditions are prevalent, you may fall victim to repeated asthma attacks. Unfortunately, you can seldom avoid these triggers in a city or during hay fever season.

Herbs to treat asthma

Herbs that have anti-spasmodic and expectorant properties are good for relieving the tightness in your chest brought on during an asthma attack.

Guelder rose

Also known as crampbark, the guelder rose is a familiar small tree growing throughout Europe and North America. Bark from the tree, which is stripped in spring, is used in tinctures to help with breathing difficulties and to ease a tight chest. It contains coumarins and salicin. Gather strips and shavings of the guelder rose for your tincture.

It has valuable anti-spasmodic and expectorant properties, helping to clear phlegm from the bronchial passages. It is also believed to desensitize the nerve endings in the bronchioles, helping to slow the heart rate and easing breathing during asthma attacks. An infusion helps ease anxiety caused by stress.

Baical skullcap

A traditional Chinese herbal medicine, baical skullcap has shown promising results in clinical trials. The root of this perennial herb is harvested when the plant is 3 to 4 years old to prepare decoctions and tinctures. The roots contain flavonoids, which reduce inflammation in the lungs triggered by allergic reactions. Baical skullcap is rich in plant sterols.

Honeysuckle

The delicate, fragrant blossoms of this climbing plant are dried and used in infusions to treat asthma and chesty coughs. Honeysuckle flowers contain iridoids, volatile oils and tannins, which have an antispasmodic effect on phlegm. Honeysuckle berries are toxic so only pedals should be used.

Visnaga

Native to the Middle East and North Africa, the seeds of this herb are collected in fall and dried. Infusions and powders are prepared to treat asthma. The herb is rich in powerful antispasmodics such askhellins and visnagin. Both compounds are now chemically derived and used in conventional medicine. A visnaga infusion can calm spasm attacks.

 Lobelia

The pretty blue flowers of this annual herb make a potent respiratory stimulant. Valued for their antispasmodic and expectorant properties, they ate stronger, deeper breathing. Active ingredients are piperidine alkaloids and carboxylic acid. Lobelia can often be found growing wild in summer.

Holistic Pet Care http://333connect.com/holistic-pet-care.html Thu, 29 Mar 2012 03:54:34 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=163 An Introduction to Holistic Pet Care

Treating Causes Not Just Symptoms

by Marian Brown

Pets continue to be popular in our society, yet the reasons we have them is changing. No longer are our dogs, cats, and horses “working” for their keep, they have become trusted companions and family members. They enjoy the comforts of our homes, and in recent years the benefits of improved health care and specifically holistic veterinary care.

Holistic veterinary care, like that of human care, looks at the “whole”, not just isolated parts. It focuses on resolving the cause and the problem, not just alleviating symptoms. Overall improvement of the quality of life and living is the goal. In addition to western approaches, such as antibiotics (drugs) and surgery, holistic approaches include acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, herbology, Bach flower remedies, and nutritional therapy.

A major key in holistic veterinary care is that the doctor looks at the whole picture. Most will take a detailed background of the animal–medical being just a part. They will look at the environment the animal came from and where it is now, any recurrent problems and their pattern, and the pet’s relationship with its owner (and family members). From this information the veterinarian, with the owner, can work to pinpoint causes and develop appropriate and feasible treatment plans. The plan may include several approaches and phases with optimum health as its goal. An example may be that the pet receives an antibiotic for a severe infection, acupuncture for improved healing and well-being, and an improved diet.

Holistic veterinary care in the Western world is still in its infancy. The American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, based in Maryland, was just founded in 1981. And more recently in 1988, acupuncture was recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Both veterinary acupuncturist and chiropractors have formed their own organizations to help educate and create awareness of the alternatives available in veterinary care. Homeopathic veterinarians participate in the National Center for Homeopathy.

Holistic pet care has come a long way in just a short time, but it still has a way to go to be accepted and utilized by more pet owners.
