Uses for Essential Oils http://333connect.com/uses-for-essential-oils.html Mon, 28 Jan 2013 06:31:00 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=840 What are essential Oils?

Uses for Essential Oils are not only extracted from flowers but are botanical extracts from various plant materials including herbs, trees and other parts of plants. The essential oils are extracted using a variety of methods depending on the material that is being used. The resulting liquids are highly aromatic. Essential Oils appear to be expensive but they are highly concentrated so it only takes a few drops.

Essential oils have a long history and have been used by many prominent holistic practitioners. These oils are different than other non-essential oils. The essential oils will evaporate if left open and have therapeutic properties to promote health. Essential oils are not the same as perfume or fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer.

Different Methods of Using Essential Oils

The oils can be used during massage where the oil is absorbed through the skin and vaporization where the molecules enter the bloodstream via the lungs. Essential oils can be taken medicinally but you must know what you are doing before taking them internally. It is best to consult a professional practitioner.

The many uses of Essential Oils

  • Air Freshener
  • Bathing
  • Compresses
  • Foot and Hand Bathes
  • Showers
  • Hair Care
  • Massage
  • Skin Care
  • Vaporization

Essential oils are often used by diluting them with carrier oil (sweet almond oil, apricot kernel oil, grape seed oil) and then applying this blend to the skin for absorption. Essential Oils are usually sold for individual use in very small bottles. Essential oils can vary greatly in quality and price. Factors that can affect the quality and price of the oil include the rarity of the botanical, the country of origin and growing/climate conditions, quality standards of the distiller, and how much oil is produced by the botanical.

Essential oils can often be purchased as blends of several essential oils. The advantage if it is a blend of pure essential oils is that you can save from having to buy every essential oil individually. The disadvantage is that you have no control over the blend by not mixing it yourself nor can you reliably mix the blend with other oils.

Carrier oils (also known as fixed oils and base oils)

Essential Oils must be diluted before they are used on the skin and this is done by using carrier oil. The essential oil is mixed with the carrier oil which dilutes the concentrated molecules and this also helps to spread the oil on the skin.

Common Carrier Oils

Almond oil – Aloe Vera oil – Apricot kernel oil

Avocado oil – Calendula oil – Evening primrose oil

Grape seed oil – Hazelnut oil – Jojoba oil

Macadamia oil – Rosehip oil – Sesame oil

Walnut oil – Wheat germ oil

Carrier oils should be extracted using the cold pressed method in which no external heat is used to force more oil out.

Herbal Remedies for Bladder Infections http://333connect.com/herbal-remedies-for-bladder-infections.html Sat, 19 Jan 2013 04:41:00 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=814 Ease the discomfort and pain of a bladder infection by using the healing powers of the herbal world. Good herbs for treating this condition include horsetail and couch grass.

Bladder and urinary tract infections can be painful. Inflammation of the bladder is caused by bacterial infection, and the symptoms include discomfort in the lower abdomen, back aches and a stabbing pain when urinating. A feverish headache and vomiting can also result in some acute cases.

Herbal Remedies for Bladder Infections

Reducing Swelling

Couch grass and horsetail are some of the herbs that can help to treat an infected or inflamed bladder.

Herbal remedies can provide relief from chronic urinary infections. Anti-microbial herbs such as golden seal and cranberry are useful against bacteria such as E. coli, and you can reduce bladder inflammation with herbs such as marshmallow. Horsetail promotes the production of water, which dilutes the acidic urine and can ease feelings of discomfort. Herbs such as couch grass can help to repair a damaged and irritated bladder wall, restoring its elasticity and strength.

Herbal Remedies for Bladder InfectionsCauses of bladder infections

The bladder is a symbol holding tank for urine that is set to be released from the body. The tough muscular walls of the bladder are protected from acidity and infection by mucosal secretions that are produced by the bladders lining.

The wrong diet

Bacterial infections can take a hold, especially when health is poor. Bad nutrition, stress and tiredness all increase susceptibility to infection.

A high sugar diet and alcohol binge drinking can increase the chances of a bladder infection. Poor personal hygiene and tight fitting underwear can also cause infections. Another cause of bladder infection can be the friction generated against a woman’s urethra during sexual intercourse. This can be prevented by urinating after sex to remove any foreign fluids.

Herbs for healing the bladder

Some herbs are particularly suited for bladder infections because of their ability to minimize bacterial infection and sooth the lining of the bladder.

Corn silk

Corn silk is used fresh, or dried as an infusion or tincture. Use it to provide anti-inflammatory relief from urinary infections and kidney stones. Its diuretic properties help to dilute the concentration of urine. Native Americans used corn silk to treat bladder infections.

Cranberry

Just extracted from the crushed red berries of this creeping Bog Bush cleanses the urinary tract. It is particularly effective treating the E. coli bacterial infection of the bladder by binding to the bacteria, preventing them from proliferating. Mixed with raspberry lime juice for a refreshing herbal tonic to help prevent future reoccurring infections.

Sarsaparilla

Sarsaparilla is a member of the lily family and is rich in steroidal saponins that are anti-inflammatory and bind to bacterial toxins in the urinary system. It is useful for treating cystitis and kidney infections. Sarsaparilla root was also used in old-fashioned medicinal beers.

Couchgrass

A tincture prepared from this perennial grass has soothing anti-inflammatory properties. Its gentle diuretic action dilutes the concentration of urine, protecting the urinary tract from infection and inflammation. Couchgrass can be a pest in the lawn but it is very useful for healing.

Marshmallow

Marshmallow root is rich in mucilage compounds that act to sooth the lining of the urinary tract. Marshmallow should be taken as a decoction or tincture to decrease inflammation associated with bladder infections. The leaves from marshmallow can also be used to make an infusion or may be prepared as a vegetable.

Goldenseal

This golden flowered herb is native to Europe and northern Asia, where it grows on hillsides and Meadows. Its aerial parts are harvested to make a tincture to treat cystitis. Goldenseal has diuretic properties and tones the muscles of the bladder walls. It contains saponin compounds, which have anti-fungal actions.

Horsetail

Horsetail is a urinary astringent, reducing bleeding and inflammation. It also speeds the repair of damaged tissue and improves the strength and elasticity of the bladder wall. To release its healing powers, make a  juice from the aerial parts of the plant. Horsetail contains silica and other healing minerals.

Bearberry

The leaves and berries of this European evergreen shrub provide a potent antiseptic for treating urinary infections. It is most effective in alkaline conditions, so avoid using it in conjunction with acidic cranberry. Bearberry was used in Roman times to soothe the bladder.

Prepare a tincture of marshmallow, corn silk or golden seal and add it to cranberry juice to make a powerful treatment for bladder infections.

Decoction for bladder infections

This decoction utilizes the soothing mucus inducing properties of marshmallow root combined with the healing agents contained within Echinacea to relieve the pain and discomfort associated with bladder infections. Here’s how to make this decoction;

1. Simmer 1 teaspoon each of dried, powdered marshmallow root and Echinacea root in a quart of water for 20 to 30 min. Make sure the mixture is well sealed so that none of the healing vapors escape.

2. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve. Reserve the liquid in a covered container.

3. Your healing decoction is ready to drink. Try to consume 3 to 4 times a day as liquids are important for flushing out the urinary tract. If the symptoms persist then you should consult a physician.

Healing with Aromatherapy http://333connect.com/healing-with-aromatherapy.html Wed, 16 Jan 2013 00:38:00 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=796 The Magic of Aromatherapy

You can harness the healing and uplifting qualities of plant fragrances to help you relax, unwind and even treat minor ailments.

You can find out simply and pleasurably just how beneficial aromatherapy can be by adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to the next bath that you take. You will notice the difference immediately. As you smell the relaxing fragrance of the oil surrounding you, its peacefulness and tranquility will lift your spirits, promote relaxation and soothe stress.

Aromatherapy is the art of healing with essential oils – distilled essences that have been extracted from plants. These can be used in massage and inhalation techniques, added to bathroom products such as soap, skin creams, bath gel and shampoos, and also used to create room fragrances.

Aromatherapy also involves the use of incense (in loose, powdered form or as Joss sticks), potpourri, steam inhalations, scented candles and fresh flowers.

Essential oils applied to the skin are absorbed into bloodstream to take immediate effect. Relaxing in a soothing, fragrant bath will improve your mood as well as your skin.

Diluted up to 10 drops of oil in 30 ml of carrier base before using it on your skin. Rub your massage oil into tired muscles to feel an instant benefit. Some stores sell ready blended massage oils. These don’t need to be diluted, but aren’t suitable for use in vaporizers.

Uses for Echinacea http://333connect.com/uses-for-echinacea.html Tue, 01 Jan 2013 21:22:00 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=717 Uses for Echinacea

Echinacea

Names: Purple Coneflower

Typical Places Found: Throughout North American prairies, plains, and open woodlands.

Part Used:  The root

Anti-microbial, immunomodulator, anti-catarrhal, alterative

Echinacea is one of the primary remedies for helping the body rid itself of microbial infections. It is often effective against both bacterial and viral attacks, and may be used in conditions such as boils, septicemia and similar infections. In conjunction with other herbs it may be used for any infection anywhere in the body. For example in combination with Yarrow or Bearberry it will effectively stop cystitis. It is especially useful for infections of the upper respiratory tract such as laryngitis, tonsillitis and for catarrhal conditions of the nose and sinus.

In general it may be used widely and safely. There are many ailments that this fantastic herb can be used for such as:

  • As a mouthwash for the treatment of pyorrhea and gingivitis
  • An external lotion to help septic sores and cuts

It seems to prevent infection and repair tissue damaged by infection, partially through inhibiting the activity of the enzyme hyaluronidase. Echinacea inhibits the action of hyaluronidase by bonding with it in some way, resulting in a temporary increase in the integrity of the barrier. This all points to the conclusion that its actions relate to immune system functioning on some level, helping deal with infections and stimulating the immune response. It activates the macrophages that destroy both cancerous cells and pathogens, increases the level of phagocytosis by raising levels of white blood cells such as the neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, and B lymphocytes. It also has an effect on properidin levels, indication an activation of the complement system.

Preparations & Dosage: Decoction: put 1-2 teaspoonfuls of the root in one cup of water and bring it slowly to boil. Let it simmer for 10-15 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Tincture: Take 1-4 ml of the tincture three times a day. Echinacea is often, inappropriately, used as a daily immune support.

Comfrey Uses http://333connect.com/comfrey-uses.html Mon, 31 Dec 2012 07:43:00 +0000 http://333connect.com/?p=713 Comfrey Uses

Comfrey

Names : Knitbone

How to Collect This Herb: The roots should be unearthed in the spring or autumn when the allantoin levels are the highest. Split the roots down the middle and dry in moderate temperatures of about 40-60 degrees C.

Part Used: Root and rhizome, leaf.

Vulnerary, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, astringent, expectorant.

The impressive wound-healing properties of Comfrey are partially due to the presence of allantoin. This chemical stimulates cell proliferation and so augments wound-healing both inside and out. The addition of much demulcent mucilage makes Comfrey a powerful healing agent in gastric and duodenal ulcers, hiatus hernia and ulcerative colitis. Its astringency will help hemorrhages wherever they occur. It has been used with benefit in cases of bronchitis and irritable cough, where it will soothe and reduce irritation while helping expectoration.  Comfrey may be used externally to speed wound-healing and guard against scar tissue developing incorrectly. Care should be taken with very deep wounds, however, as the external application of Comfrey can lead to tissue forming over the wound before it is healed deeper down, possibly leading to abscesses. It may be used for any external ulcers, for wounds and fractures as a compress or poultice. It is excellent in chronic varicose ulcers. It has a reputed anti-cancer action.

Combinations: For gastric ulcers and inflammations it combines well with Marshmallow and Meadowsweet. For chest and bronchial troubles use it with Coltsfoot, White Horehound or Elecampane. For wound healing use with Calendula.

Preparations & Dosage:

Decoction: put 1-3 teaspoonfuls of the dried herb in a cup of water bring to the boil and let simmer for l0-l5 minutes. This should be drunk three times a day.

Tincture: take 2-4 ml of the tincture three times a day.
